What are gymnastic hand grips?

Gymnastic hand grips designed for cross training, functional fitness, and high-rep bar work. Built to reduce grip fatigue, protect the palm during pull-ups and toes-to-bar, and improve control during bar and ring muscle-ups in high-volume WODs.

Our grips are engineered using high-durability technical materials selected for bar adhesion, tear resistance, and consistent performance across chalked and non-chalked environments.

Designed for athletes who train frequently and require reliable hand protection during metcons, barbell-to-gymnastics transitions, and gymnastics-heavy programming.

Why Use Gymnastic Hand Grips?

Gymnastic grips serve two primary functions:

  1. Protect the skin of the palm from tearing, blistering, and callus damage

  2. Improve friction and hand stability on pull-up bars and gymnastic rings

As pulling volume increases, grips allow athletes to:

  • Sustain larger unbroken sets

  • Reduce grip fatigue during long AMRAPs

  • Maintain control during bar muscle-ups

  • Continue training without skin-related interruptions

They are performance tools designed to support high-frequency training.

When Should You Use Grips?

Grips should be introduced once an athlete has developed adequate natural grip strength and bar control.

They become appropriate when:

  • Pull-up and toes-to-bar volume increases significantly

  • Palm skin begins blistering or tearing

  • Training frequency demands consistent hand protection

We do not recommend using grips prematurely, as over-reliance on artificial grip assistance may limit natural grip development.

Grip Materials Explained

There are two primary material categories in modern functional fitness:

Chalk-Based Grips

Chalk grips require magnesium carbonate to activate optimal friction. They rely on material texture interacting with chalk to create bar adhesion.

Advantages include:

  • Greater durability under high-volume use

  • Slower wear rate compared to rubber

  • Effective performance on gymnastic rings

  • Reliable grip in chalk-heavy training environments

Chalk grips typically require initial break-in. Re-chalking depends on training volume and bar surface conditions.

No Chalk Rubber Grips

No chalk grips use high-abrasion rubber polymer compounds to generate friction directly through surface adhesion.

Advantages include:

  • Locked-in grip on clean pull-up bars

  • Performance without chalk

  • Adaptability when moving between gyms

  • Consistent traction in chalk-restricted facilities

Due to higher surface friction, rubber-based grips naturally experience faster wear compared to chalk-based materials.

Grip Models & Intended Use

BumbleBee Grips – 1.8mm

Soft and versatile. Designed to work with chalk across all pull-up bars and perform exceptionally well on gymnastic rings. Suitable for most athletes seeking balanced comfort and durability.

Panda Grips - 2mm

Stiffer construction designed for rougher bars and advanced athletes training at higher volume. Provides increased protection and structural durability.

Seal Pro Grips - 1.9mm

Designed for maximum consistent grip on clean pull-up bars. Focused on stable traction over time in controlled environments.

Seal Grips - 2.1mm

More flexible construction offering added comfort. Best suited for beginner to intermediate athletes transitioning into higher-volume gymnastics training.

Pit Viper Grips – 1.3mm Minimalist

Single-layer reinforced PVC construction without added back padding. Thin, direct bar feel. Works with or without chalk across multiple bar types. Designed for athletes who prefer minimal interference and maximum bar connection.

Training vs Competition Setup

Athletes competing or training in multiple facilities should carry both chalk and no-chalk options.

Grip material should always match the training environment:

  • Chalk-heavy gyms → Chalk-based grips perform best

  • Clean or no-chalk gyms → Rubber grips provide better adhesion

Using the correct material ensures consistent performance and reduces unnecessary wear.
